What is Doktriini?
Doktriini is an online magazine published by FAIA that focuses on themes of international politics. The magazine builds on the long-running blog that has been published for years on FAIA’s website.
Doktriini is a nationwide, politically and religiously independent magazine. Its goal is to promote high-quality discussion on international relations and to encourage young people to participate in public debate.
This year Doktriini has three rotating themes. Articles are published according to the enthusiasm of the writers, about 1–5 per month. Everyone interested in international politics is welcome to contribute. You can find more detailed writing instructions below. Doktriini is published online in the Doktriini section of FAIA’s website. In addition, we promote published articles both on social media and in our newsletter.
Doktriini is not a member of the Council for Mass Media in Finland (Julkisen sanan neuvosto, JSN), but we commit ourselves to good journalistic practice and aim to follow, as a general guideline, the Journalistic Guidelines published by the Council for Mass Media. More information on the Journalistic Guidelines can be found at https://jsn.fi/.
Doktriini was founded in March 2025, so we are still quite a new magazine. Our activities are constantly developing, so be sure to follow us on social media to stay up to date on Doktriini’s work and, of course, on the latest published articles.
The Editorial Team of Doktriini
Doktriini is published by FAIA, and its editor-in-chief is FAIA’s communications officer. Important decisions related to the magazine are made by the entire FAIA board. Our budget also falls under FAIA’s overall budget. The following editorial team has been assembled from members of the board:
Editor-in-Chief: Enni Levanen
Managing Editor: Vilma Tyrylahti
Producer and A.D.: Venla Vehkakoski
How can I write or illustrate for the magazine?
Everyone interested in international politics is welcome to write for Doktriini. We accept contributions in both Finnish and English, so you are free to write in the language you feel most comfortable with.
No previous experience in writing for a magazine is required, which makes Doktriini an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with publishing and to develop your skills. You don’t have to be a student or expert of politics or international relations to write for us—we value diverse perspectives.
If you already have a story idea—great! But a ready-made idea is not necessary; we can also brainstorm together about what topics could be covered in the magazine.
In addition to writers, we greatly value illustrators, photographers, and other visual contributors. Illustrations are an important part of finished articles, and their creators are duly credited in the published pieces.
Published work serves as a great writing sample, for example in job applications. Writing for Doktriini is also an excellent low-threshold opportunity to profile yourself as an expert in international politics. We promote published articles on both FAIA’s and Doktriini’s social media channels, ensuring your text gets the visibility it deserves.
The magazine operates on a voluntary basis, which is why no fee is paid for writing or illustrations.
You could write, for example:
- An expert interview
- A column
- An analysis
- A feature article
- A profile piece
- A personal account of an internship or exchange studies
Our editorial team will support you throughout the process. Feel free to contact us at any stage—we’ll help refine your idea, offer new perspectives, and edit your text into publishable form. Editing always improves the quality of a piece and is educational for both writers and editors. So don’t hesitate to send us your text, even if it’s still a draft!
If you’d like to contribute as a writer or illustrator, don’t hesitate to reach out to the editorial team at: doktriini [at] gmail.com.
